Sports Update Fall Semester

Starting off a new year, the sports teams at Gunderson have stepped up their game. Coming in with determination and fire, the teams have pulled off many victories so far and have more to come. Though all teams have a lot of work to do, they have shown that they all deserve a spot to be recognized.
Starting with our Varsity Boys Football team, currently at a 3-1 standing point, led by captains Armando Olmo, Roger Rose, Anthony Watson, and JC Brown. They have defeated Monte Vista 34-7, Branham 35-7, and Mission San Jose 42-6. Though they met their match at Del Mar 0-26, they still played a hard game and are ready to smash on the next team that comes their way. Head Coach Herb Espiritu predicts that his team is going to, “Play hard” and “play better each week” so that they continue to kill their opponents. He also says that his team needs to, “...work on consistency”, but believes in his team and states, “ Its not over yet.” Upcoming games are Westmont at Westmont and the big Homecoming game at Gunderson vs. Leland.
Another sport that is starting to rise at Gunderson is the Girls Vasity Volleyball. Led by Alexa Abraham, Vicky Avalos, and Head Coach Cali Lopez, they have started to change the pace in their season 2-2. They had a rough start losing to San Jose 2-3, and Del Mar 0-3, but have turned the heat up and killed Pioneer 3-0, and James Lick 3-1. Can’t wait to see what they will do in their upcoming games.
More sports that are less focused at Gunderson, but are still just as significant are Tennis and Cross Country. They have both not had many matches or meets but are hoping to draw more people to come and spectate. The Tennis Team led by coaches Ben Ravey and Ron Gibbons has only played in one match after forfitting two because a coach hadn’t been assigned yet. They did lose to Sobrato in their last match but are brushing it off and are ready to move on to the next competion. Cross Country has had only one meet also, but victorious conquered both Pioneer and Lincoln. Led by Head Coach PJ Daley, the team only consists of six athletes. That doesn’t stop their fierce team in trying to outdue their last year records.
